Skanda is a Hindu deity, also called as Subrahmanya, Kumara or Karttikeya. In Sanskrit, Skanda means ‘Attacker’ or ‘Leaper’. Skanda is Shiva’s firstborn son. Skanda is the younger brother of Lord Ganesha. Though Skanda is known for his war-like characteristics, valiant and brave capabilities of a warrior, he is also known for his love for virtuous deeds and his handsome and graceful appearance.

Different legends explain varied circumstances of Skanda’s birth. According to the poem Kumarasambhava of Kalidasa’s epic, the gods wish Skanda’s birth so that he could kill Taraka, the demon. A boon was granted to Taraka that he would be killed only by Shiva’s son. Accordingly, Parvati was sent by the gods to coax Shiva into marrying her but she was not successful. The gods also struck Shiva with an arrow from the God of Love, Kama, but that too was burnt into ashes by Shiva. Many years later, the gods sent the God of Fire, Agni to disturb Shiva’s passionate play with Parvati. On receiving the seed, Agni dropped it into the River Ganges after which was born, Skanda.

Skanda is also called, ‘Son of Krittikas’ – Karttikya as he was looked after the six stars ‘Krittikas’. To drink milk of the six nurses, Skanda developed 6 faces. Skanda is also called Kumara as he is believed that he never married.

The powerful Skanda deity is believed to have mighty strength to lead an army of gods. Skanda originated as Murugan in Southern India and has a lot of devotees following him in worship. Skanda God is depicted with either one or 6 heads, rides a peacock and hold a bow, spear and arrows.
