Vach is called the ‘Hindu Communication Goddess’, ‘Goddess of Spoken Words’ or the ‘Hindu Goddess of Speech’. The female Vedic goddess is also called the ‘the Goddess of Written Words and Wisdom’ and ‘Mother of the four sacred Vedas’. According to the Padma Purana she is called the ‘Friend of Musicians (Gandharva)’, ‘Mother of Emotions’ and also the ‘Wife of Vision (Kashyapa)’.
This magnificent goddess provides energy and expression to everyone she loves through inspired visionaries and poets. She is Lord Indra’s consort in Aitareya Aranyaka. She is Daksha’s daughter and Sage Kashyapa is her husband.
In Sanskrit, she is referred to as ‘source of voice’ and is called the creator of the sacred language in the Hindu texts. The word Vac means language, speech, talk or voice. She is called the creator of the alphabet. Vach, in early Rig-Veda is associated to a priest’s voice rasied during a sacrifice.
This female deity is believed to be the first one to deliver the first word and speak to her people. The OM of creation has also been uttered by her. Goddess Vach is the sustainer of Hinduism (Soma) and personifies truth.
Vach is portrayed dressed in gold and as a graceful and mature lady. An interesting belief is that her husband was so mesmerized with her beauty that he developed five faces on him so that he could view her from all angles.
As per later Vedic literature and post Vedic texts of Hindu traditions, Goddess Vach has been associated with Goddess Sarasvati. In Hinduism she is one of the most worshipped and significant deity.
