In the Hindu tradition, Atri or Attri is one of the seven great Vedic sages (Saptarishi) out of the seven great Saptarshis or the great Rishis named Vashistha, Marichi, Pulastya, Angiras, Kratu and Pulaha. Of the 7 Saptarishis, Atri is the last one. He originated from the tongue, it is believed. Atri is credited with composing many hymns to Indra, Agni and other Vedic deities of Hinduism. In the Rigveda scripture he is one of the most mentioned Vedic sages.

In his honor, the Atri Mandala has been dedicated to him in the fifth Mandala (Book) of the Rigveda. The Rigveda contains 87 hymns that are accredited to him and his successors.

Hindu Epics like the Mahabharata and Ramayana as well as the Puranas have mention of the Vedic sage Atri.  As per legends of the Vedic era, Atri wedded Anasuya Devi (one of the 7 female pativratas) and bore 3 sons. Vishnu was born to her as Dattatreya, Brahma was born as Chandra while Shiva was born as Durvasa. Legends also state another version that Anasuya used her chastity powers to save the 3 gods who were born to her as children, in return.

A divine voice one ordered him to do penance to which he agreed without hesitation. Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma – the Hindu trinity was extremely pleased with his prayers, devotion and severe penance. The appeared in front of Atri and granted him boons. The boons he asked was that the Hindu trinity be born to him after which he bore 3 sons.
