Brahma is the Hindu God of Creation of the Universe. This male deity is the do-it-yourself god of meditation from which all knowledge is attained. Of the Hindu TRIMURTI or trinity of top Gods, this God is the first. The Hindu triumvirate consists of 3 gods with each of them being responsible for creation, conservation and destruction of the world. Shiva and Vishnu are the other two gods. The doctrine of Trimurti considers Brahma, Shiva and Vishnu as the 3 forms of the un-manifested supreme deity.

It is said that he was pondering of the very beginning and the first thought that came to him was that, he should exist. Accordingly he thought of himself as a lovely golden egg and was born out of it and lo and behold, there he was. Creating the Universe was the next thing he indulged in. Some myths have also described him as born from a lotus which grew out of Vishnu’s navel thus making him a creation of Vishnu himself.

He went into meditation and ensured that everything was planned properly. To manage all operations, he also created the Prajapatis – a team of assistants. Once this was completed, he took a rest which he had earned really well. Then he entrusted exciting adventures to Vishnu with the task of preserving the Universe and Shiva the role of destroying the Universe for the purpose of recreating. Brahma now remains aloft and aloof with his 4 heads looking towards the four direction of the world.

Brahma is one of the major gods of Hinduism from the period 500 BCE to 500 CE. He holds a scepter or rosemary, a bow, an alms bowl and the foremost, ancient and oldest Hindu scriptures called the Rigveda.
