Daksha is one of Brahma’s wish-born-sons. Some sources indicate that Aditi (wife of Kashyaand Brahma are his parents. He is one of the Adityas, as per the Rig Veda.
Daksha is a creator deity from the ancient times. Daksha means ‘the skilled one’. He is one of the Adityas, the Rishis and the Prajapatis. He is born to Brahma and Aditi. He is said to be the father of Aditia and Diti, Dakshayani’s sisters and Kashyapa’s wives. Prasuti his wife gave birth to 13 daughters namely, Diti, Aditi, Krodha, Kadru, Kala, Muni, Danayu, Danu, Kapila, Sinhika, Vinata, Viswa and Pradha. A number of them got married to Soma. Soma however favored Rohini (one of the daughters) more than the others, flouted his responsibilities and thus neglected the rest. Soma was given a curse by Daksha, to wither and die. His death was made periodic by his daughters which is exemplified by waning and waxing of the moon (Chandra).
Daksha is considered to one of the sons of Brahma (a Prajapati). Dakshayani or Shakti was said to be one of his youngest daughters. She was desirous of marrying Shiva but he was unwilling for it. She disobeyed Daksha, married the loving and dotting Shiva. Daksha detested and condemned Shiva and called him a roaming and dirty ascetic. Daksha stayed away from Shiva and his daughter, which in the end culminated in a great sacrifice hosted by him. He disdained and snubbed Shakti but she maintained composure. Later however the grief stricken Shakti committed suicide for her beloved Shiva. Shiva attacked Daksha, dashed his matted hair to the ground from which rose the terrible Rudrakali and the ferocious Virabhadra. The two killed Daksha and many other guests upon Shiva’s orders. Later on the remorseful Shiva restored Daksha’s life with the head of a goat. Daksha became one of Shiva’s most devoted attendants repenting for his sinful deeds.
