Many of the scholars are of the opinion that the oldest religion in the world is Hinduism, the customs and roots of which date back to more than four thousand years. After Islam and Christianity, the third largest religion is Hinduism. Hinduism is believed to have around 9000 followers. 95 percent of all Hindus live in India.
One of the most unique religions is Hinduism. A number of philosophies and traditions are compiled in this religion. Tracing the history and origins of Hinduism is difficult as there is no known founder of this religion. Other religions of India like Jainism, Sikhism and Buddhism are closely related to Hinduism. There are some basic concepts related to Hindu beliefs.
- At times Hinduism is referred to as a ‘family of religions’ and at times ‘a way of life’ as compared to any other organized single religion.
- One Hindu belief is that ‘life is a continuous cycle or life, death and reincarnation’ called Samsara and ‘the universal law of cause and effect’ called Karma.
- Though Hindus worship the ‘Brahman’ a single deity, they still worship other goddesses and gods. Hinduism forms are henotheistic with the belief that to reach god, they have to follow multiple paths.
- More emphasis is laid on morality and good conduct which is a code of living called Dharma.
- Hindus believe that the current and future life of a person is determined by their current thoughts and actions.
- All living creatures are worshipped by Hindus and the cow especially is considered to be a sacred animal. Most Hindus are vegetarians and most don’t consume pork or beef.
- The ‘belief in soul’ or ‘Atman’ is one key thoughts of Hinduism with a belief that all living things have a soul and all form a part of the Supreme soul. Hindus believe that once salvation or ‘Moksha’ is achieved, the cycle of rebirth ends and becomes a part of the absolute soul.
