Shri Saraswati is the goddess of arts and knowledge and is the connoisseur of free flow of wisdom and consciousness. Shri Saraswati is the mother of the Vedas and the chants to her begins and ends with Vedic lessons. Shri Saraswati is the daughter of Lord Shiva and Goddess Durga and she is goddess who awards the human beings with power of speech, learning and wisdom. Her four hands represent the four aspect of human personality in learning like mind, intellect, alertness and ego. Her one hand has the sacred scriptures and the lotus in the other one which represents the symbol of true knowledge.
Her other two hands plays the plays the music of love and life on veena. She is symbol of purity and rides on the white swan and is dressed in white. The learned and scholarly worship the goddess of Saraswati and only Saraswati can grant moksha – which is the final liberation of the soul. It is believed that manifestation of Adi Shakti and Omkar happened at the same time and when Adi Shakti manifested Omkar sound was created in the universe. This is the expression of three primal powers which A U M. In this A represents the power of pure desire- Shri Mahakali, U is the power of action – Shri Mahasaraswati and M is the power of evolution – Shri Mahalaxmi.
Omkar is the beginning of music and music has become the universal language. Lord Brahma gave the Adi sangeet, music to Devi Saraswati and the veena in her hands is the symbol of music. Shri Saraswati is not Vidya alone but music also. Music in this world is born from Shri Saraswati who in turn gave it to Narad Maharshi and he is the person who taught Gandharvas, Apsaras and Kinnaras music. Shri Saraswati music has come to human beings through the rishis and munis and they are called Bhagiraths.
