Ramakrishna Paramhansa also called as Sri Ramakrishna Paramahansa Ramkrisno Poromohongso was a great philosopher, Hindu mystic, saint and founder of the Ramakrishna Order in India. He was born on February 18th 1836 in Kamarpukur. He was born as Ramakrishna ‘Gadadhar’ Chattopadhyay. In nineteenth century Bengal, he was considered as an avatar. He was a believer of Advaita Vedanta Bhakti Tantra philosophy. In his religious career, Ramakrishna had a number of gurus, including Bhairavi Brahmani and Totapuri. His Guru Totapuri played a significant role in his life.
Right from the time Ramakrishna was a young boy, he was attracted to spiritual life. He was married to Sarada Devi. Later on he got appointed as the temple priest of the Dakshneswar Temple. Whenever Ramakrishna would indulge in complete devotional fervor, he would fall into total trance and experience the transcendental reality.
People from far and near and all walks of life and from all walks of life began approaching Ramakrishna for guidance and spiritual advice. In fact a lot of young women and men were drawn spiritually towards him. In the same manner, Swami Vivekananda too was drawn spiritually towards Ramakrishna. Within no time Vivekananda became Ramakrishna’s beloved disciple along with many other followers and started spreading his teachings and fame.
Ramakrishna Paramhansa died in August 16th 1886 in Cossipore, Kolkata at 50 years of age. Millions of people in India continue to remain inspired with the powerful legacy Ramakrishna has left behind. The popular Ramakrishna Movement was initiated by Ramakrishna’s disciples after he passed away. In the year 1897, the Ramakrishna Mission turned obscure however the founders put in continued selfless and tireless efforts, after which it progressed into a global movement.
