Rohini is the beautiful wife and queen of Lord Krishna, the Hindu God. At times she is also stated to head the junior wives of Lord Krishna. During the Dwapara Yuga – Krishna was the King of Dwarka and he is also the avatar of Lord Vishnu. Rohini is referred to as the queen in the Mahabharata, the famous Hindu epic. She is also mentioned in the Harivamsa (appendix of the Mahabharata) and the Bhagavata Purana.
Rohini is also called as one of the Ashtabharya. Lord Krishna is believed to have 8 main queen consorts, the Ashtabharya with as many as 16000 or 16100 wives. In certain lists she is identified with Jambavati queen.
As per the Mausala Parva of the Mahabharata, it is stated that Rohini is one amongst the four wives who immolated herself by jumping into the funeral pyre of Lord Krishna and committed Sati.
In Hindu mythology, Rohini is the name of many individuals. She is the consort and chief wife of the Moon God, Chandra. All her sisters are married to Lord Chandra. Her parents are Daksha and siblings are Sati, Aditi, Diti, Rati and 26 other Nakshatras.
She is also called the wife of Vasudeva, who is the son of Shurasena, while Devaki was his other wife. By divine intervention, Balarama was transported from Devaki’s womb to Rohini’s womb.
Rohini is also called the mother of Subhadra, who later on married her cousin Arjuna (through Kunti – Vasudeva’s sister). Rohini is also believed to be the grandmother of King Parikshit of Hastinapura and the mother of Abhimanyu.
