Rukmini also called as Rukmani in Sanskrit is the chief consort of Krishna, the prince of Dwarka.  She fell in love with the greatness, charm, character and virtues heard about Krishna.  She was the princess of Vidarba. Krishna and Rukmini loved each other immensely but since her brother Rukmi opposed the marriage, Krishna kidnapped and secretly ran away with her. Kamsa the uncle of Rukmi was killed by Krishna, because of which Rukmi was angry with Krishna. However Krishna took Rukmini away in Rakshsa style.

As per Puranic literature, Rukmini is the incarnation of Goddess Lakshmi. She is described as the Mother of the Divine World, the Queen of the Divine World and the Mulaprakrti (Swarupa-shakti) which is Krishna’s (Krsnatmika) essential potency.

King Bishmaka, the powerful king of Vidarbha was the father of Rukmini.  Rukmini belongs to the Vedic Aryan tribe and was born as a royal princess at Hariwar.

Rukmini is the strength of Krishna just as Lakshmi is the Power-Shakti of Lord Vishnu. Rukmini was Krishna’s devoted wife and was humble in her services towards her God. Her real inner beauty was her devotion and she had real control over Krishna’s heart.

The Rukmini Temple is dedicated in her name at Dwarka. It is believed that her servant messenger appeared as a greatest saint during 1480-1600 in the Madhvacharya tradition and glorified her in the 1240 verses of the popular Rukminishavijaya spread across 19 chapters.  Rukmini is said to belong to the Idu-Mishmi tribe according to the Idu-Mishmi tribe of Arunachal Pradesh.
