Satguru Sivaya Subramuniyaswami is well known amongst his followers as Gurudeva. He was born in January 5th 1927, in Oakland, California, United States. Right from a young age he adopted Shaivism. He was founder of the Saiva Siddhanta Church. He worked zealously for more than 50 years to spread Siva consciousness and promote the cause of Hinduism all across the five continents of the world. He was also the 162nd head of the Nandinatha Sampradaya’s Kailasa Parampara.
On attaining 20 years of age he travelled to Sri Lanka and India in 1947. The well known worshipper of Lord Shiva and Siddha Yogi, named Jnanaguru Yogaswami of Jaffna, Sri Lanka initiated Sivaya Subramuniyaswami into Sannyasa in 1949. Satguru Sivaya Subramuniyaswami was considered as one of the most remarkable mystics of the twentieth century.
He was Guru at the 458 acre Kauai’s Hindu Temple-Monastery Complex located on the Garden Island of Hawaii from where he undertook a number of tours, organized numerous activities in the process of providing inspiration to millions of devotees. He revealed secrets of the inner worlds of Siva through his extensive writings. Satguru Sivaya Subramuniyaswami promoted the cause of Hinduism through the Hindu Heritage Endowment and Hinduism Today (an international monthly magazine), the Himalayan Academy and the Siddhanta Church.
He established around fifty Hindu temples across the world and also a 7 acre ashram in Mauritius. The 7 acre monastery established by him in Mauritius includes the ‘Spiritual Park-Pointe de Lascars’ –a public Spiritual Park. To help those searching for salvation through Hinduism, he wrote approximately 30 books on Yoga and Hindu mysticism and metaphysics. Satguru Sivaya Subramuniyaswami took Mahasamadhi in November 12th 2001 in Kapa’a, Hawaii, United States.
