Savitri goddess is the daughter of Savitr – the solar deity as per Hindu mythology. She is the wife of Brahma, the Creator God and the epitome of being a faithful wife. When her husband Satyavan was destined to die, Savitri used her power of dedication towards him to stop the God of the Dead, Yama from taking him.
In the Rigveda and many ritual contexts, a verse is dedicated to the term Savitri as an important mantra in Hinduism. It is believed that this Hindu Goddess has cursed the Trinity.
She is the manifestation of the Hindu Goddess of learning and arts, Goddess Saraswati. She is also called as Goddess of fine arts, wisdom, creativity and intellectual knowledge and provides inspiration to the written word and speech. Savitri is also believed to be the Shakti of Creation – the ever flowing river of consciousness. As a Goddess of dawn, she lights the eternal knowledge lamp by eliminating the darkness of ignorance. Confusion and chaos prevails, in her absence.
In the popular Gayatri Mantra which is recited three times a day, there are 3 goddesses (Saraswati, Gayatri and Savitri) who represent the presiding deities. Being a goddess of learning, she is worshipped by devotees, once every year.
Savitri’s mount is the lotus which means enlightenment and joy. She has 5 faces; out of which three of her five heads are of Brahman, Vishnu and Shiva – the masculine Trimurti. The five elements are also symbolized by her 5 heads. Her ten arms signify 10 senses of the body.
