Shatrughna is Rama’s youngest brother, born to Queen Sumitra and King Dashratha. When he was born his divinity was split with Lakshmana, his twin brother. A number of aspects of Lakshmana’s character and personality were mirrored by Shatrughna. Shatrughna was very much attached to the devoted and unworldly Bharat, the son of Kaikeyi. He followed Bharata everywhere as he understood that Bharata was a devotee of Rama, entirely.

Shatrughna, the Hindu God, played a role in the Hindu epic Ramayana which is vital to the goal and main story of the epic. He killed the demon king of Mathura, named Lavanasura. The demon king was nephew of the King of Lanka, Ravana who was killed by Rama. Lavanasura was in possession of the Trident (Trishula) of Lord Shiva due to which nobody could stop him from doing sinful activities, nor could anyone kill him. Accordingly Shratughna pleaded to Rama to allow him to kill Lavanasura. He used an arrow assimilated with Vishnu’s power and killed Lavanasura the demon king.

According to Hindi mythology, when Vishnu’s seventh avatar, Lord Rama, finished his pious role for 11,000 years on earth, he goes to the River Sarayu to go back to his eternal and true Mahavishnu form. Both Shatrughna and Bharata follow Rama into the river and merge into Mahavishnu.

Some of the temples dedicated in the name of Shatrughna are the Shatrughna Temple at Kans-tila, Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, the Shatrughna Temple at Muni Ki Reti, Rishikesh and the Shatrughna Temple at Payammal at Thrissur District of Kerala.
