Shri Guru Dattatreya, also known as Shri Datta Guru, holds a significant place in Hindu mythology and spirituality. He is revered as the embodiment of the Holy Trinity – Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. The name “Dattatreya” is derived from “Datta,” meaning “given,” and “Atreya,” referring to the sage Atri, his father.

One of the prominent stories associated with Shri Guru Dattatreya revolves around his birth. Legend has it that the sage Atri and his wife Anasuya were devout practitioners of penance and virtue. Pleased with their devotion, the Trinity – Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva – appeared before them, disguised as sages seeking alms. However, they put forth an unusual request: that Anasuya should serve them food without wearing any clothes. Anasuya, in her innocence and devotion, turned the three gods into infants and nursed them. Impressed by her purity, they revealed their true forms and blessed her with three sons – Dattatreya, Chandra, and Durvasa.
As Shri Guru Dattatreya grew, he imbibed the wisdom and teachings of all three divine aspects. He became a wandering ascetic, traversing forests and mountains, spreading spiritual knowledge and guiding seekers on their path to enlightenment. He is often depicted as having three heads, symbolizing the unity of the Trinity, and carrying various objects such as a conch shell, a discus, and a trident, representing the powers of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva respectively.
Shri Guru Dattatreya’s teachings emphasize the importance of detachment, self-realization, and compassion. He is believed to have imparted wisdom to numerous disciples, including prominent sages like Parasurama and Alarka. His philosophy transcends sectarian boundaries, embracing all paths leading to the divine.
Devotees of Shri Guru Dattatreya celebrate his divine presence through various rituals, prayers, and festivals. Datta Jayanti, commemorating his birth, is observed with fervent devotion in many parts of India. Pilgrimage sites such as Girnar in Gujarat, Gangapur in Maharashtra, and Manik Prabhu Temple in Karnataka are considered sacred to his devotees.
