Shri Swami Samarth was one of the greatest spiritual teachers who lived in the 19th century. His intellectual explanation of Vedantic philosophy was a real experience for his devotees and many of them could reach the spiritual heights by his gracious glance. Even the greatest yogis who found it difficult to climb the highest peak in Yoga easily overcame the hindrance in the presence of Swamiji and enjoyed the heavenly elixir. Through His grace and blessings one could appreciate the deep and underlying importance behind the concentrated and cryptic sentences.
Swamiji’s Advise
Swamiji used to advise his devotees “cultivate the field and harvest the crop”. This was meaningful and directed to both the dualist who like to devotionally worship God as a finite human embodiment and to the non dualist who likes to believe that God is a formless supreme consciousness or the parabrahma. This deep and thoughtful message is applicable to those who want to do well in the worldly life also. Right action or cultivation is needed to make a farm and it includes planting, tilling and fertilizing. The final result is that the farmer can harvest a bounty of the crop.
In the similar way, Dhan-Dnanya and Bhakti Yogis have to purify and prepare themselves under the guidance of a Sadguru before harvesting the treasured goal of never-ending silence, which is God. The sadguru will test the soil, which is the disciple and sow the seed of sadhana. Later it the duty of the aspirant to progress towards to his final goal and this has to be done with his own efforts. This si what Swamiji meant by “Cutivate the field and harvest the crop”.
Spiritual Union
Swamiji believed in constant spiritual union with God which is called Sahajsamadhi. In the usual Samadhi, the consciousness of the person merges with the supreme consciousness and the aspirant yogi drinks the nectar of ever increasing ecstasy till the Samadhi lasts. The physical position of the Yogi is like a statue during this time. This Samadhi should be practised only under the guidance of the Sadguru otherwise the person who is practising will not be able to come out from the trance and he may even enter into a coma. When the individual come back to the material plane the worldly sensations starts revolving in the mind and it disturbs the continuity of ecstasy. In Sahajsamadhi, the person is linked with heavenly divinity instinctively and continuously. This link with the divinity happens even when you are occupied in worldly responsibilities.
