Siva Yogaswami was a Sri Lankan spiritual master of the 20th century. He was originally known as Sadasivan and also called as Jnana Guru Siva Yogaswami and born in 1872 in Maviddapuram, Sri Lanka. A lot of Hindus worshipped him as a Natha and Sivajnani but he also had a number of Buddhist and Catholic devotees as well. As per the Nandinatha Sampradaya’s Kailasa Parampara, he was the 161st Jagadacharya.
Siva Yogaswami completed his education at St.Patrick’s Collge. Natchintanai is the popular book written by Siva Yogaswami besides many other sayings and songs. Till the year 1905 Siva Yogaswami lived a normal life, till he met his Guru. He continued to stay with his Guru till the year 1911, till the Guru passed away. After this, Siva Yogaswami spent some years, meditating intensely. He started gaining a name and devotees started thronging around him.
Sivathondan, (meaning the servant of India) was a journal initiated by Siva Yogaswami. Siva made used this journal as a famous vehicle to convey his message to his devotees and rest of the people. In 1940 he travelled across different places in India. Siva Yogaswami met Ramana Maharshi, on visiting Kashi. Under the guidance of Satguru Chellappaswami, he practiced Kundalini Yoga. In the process Siva also attained Guru Diksha from his Guru.
In one unfortunate incident in the year 1961, Siva Yogaswami had to be confined in Jaffna in the indoors of his Ashram. He left for heavenly abode in Jaffna, Sri Lanka at a ripe age of 91 years, in the year 1964 much to the distress of his followers. The legacy Siva Yogaswami has left behind continues to remain, even till this day.
