Vali had received a blessing to get half the strength, his enemy had. Rama was aware of this and accordingly hid behind the trees and then killed Vali. Since Vali and his brother Sugriva had similar appearances, Rama was confused and failed in his first attempt to kill Vali. However in the next attempt, Rama was able to recognize Vali as Sugriva wore a garland of red flowers and went into the boxing arena to fight with Vali. Rama killed Vali with an arrow. Rama also granted Vali moksha, after which Sugriva convinced Angada his son to stand by Rama’s army and also support Sugriva his uncle in all his work.
