Variyar Swamigal also known as Kirupanandha Variyar was a great religious scholar. His name was Thiru Muruga Kirupanandha Variyar originally but later on he gained popularity as Variyar Samigal. This spiritual Shaivite teacher was born in India on August 25th 1906 in Kangeyanallur, Vellore (British India) and died on November 7th, 1993 at the age of 87 years. The names of his parents are Madhu Shri Kanagavalli Ammaiyar (mother) and Siva Thiru Mallaya Dasa Bhagavathar (father). He was connected with the publication of ‘Thiryppugazh Amirtham’ a monthly magazine for around thirty six years.

As a child prodigy, Variyar Swamigal was devoted to Lord Muruga. He was involved in writing screenplays for some of the devotional films produced in southern India. He helped the needy and poor and conducted a number of social welfare activities during his lifetime. His discourses on different Shaivite legends are well known. He completed the works on a number of temples across the state.

His services to re-establish and sustain Theism and Hinduism in the Tamil Nadu state have been commendable. In the process of spreading Hinduism, he used all mediums possible and even scripted a film named Siva Kavi. He never did comparisons amongst people being superior or inferior. Variyar Swamigal proposed that the name of the woman should be added to the child’s name as an initial during one of his popular Detroit discourse on kindness of Lord Murugan. He is considered synonymous with Lord Murugan’s worship and the bulwark of Kaumara. According to him, devotion without disciple is fruitless. People of Tamil Nadu state consider him to be the 64th Nayanmar.
