Vishvakarman also called as Vishvakarma is a Hindu male deity as per Hindu mythology. In Sanskrit Vishvakarman means ‘all creating’ or ‘all accomplishing’. Vishvakarman is called the ‘Architect of all gods’ or ‘God of Architecture’. He is the patron deity of artists, artisans and workers.
As a master craftsman and divine carpenter, the deity created different weapons for the deities and constructed their chariots and cities. Vishvakarman is known to create the great Jagannatha image at Puri in Orissa. He is also the architect of Lanka, the mythical city in Hindu mythology. Humans learnt the mechanics and sciences of architecture from Lord Vishvakarman.
In India, Vishvakarman is revered in two versions. He is a young Deva in the Bengal region and an aged Deva in the northern region of India. He lives in the Vishwakarma Loka. He is known to use two mounts, the Goose and the Elephant (as per the Bengali version). Virocana is the consort of Vishvakarman. Manu, Saranyu and Chhaya (Saranyu’s shadow), Silpy, Maya, Viswajna and Trisiras are his offsprings.
Vishvakarma or Viskarman is a deity of creative power and a personification of ultimate reality. He ancient India, he was an engineer or architect who taught the construction of architectures and ancient monuments. Right from the advent of time, it is Vishvakarman who has been the divine engineer of the Universe. Vishvakarman’s name appears in the 10th book of the Rigveda around 5 times. He has been depicted with arms, faces, feet and arms on every side, eyes and wings too.
It is believed that from his 5 faces, there are 5 Prajapathis created including Vamadeva, Sadyojata, Tatpurusha, Aghora and Isana. Vishvakarma is identified with Vedic Tvastar in the later Puranas. The deity is worshipped by professionals and the architectural and engineering community.
